ABOUT THE PROJECT
a conception is a multidimensional art project that retraces visionary artist Meghan Persephone Taylor’s initiation into motherhood through her journey through conscious conception, wild pregnancy & sovereign birth journey. Her story is told through a combination of words, images, poems, love notes and other bits and pieces compiled as a digital scrapbook that was released chapter by chapter exclusively on Substack over the course of 2023.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Meghan Persephone Taylor is a wild woman, radical mother and visionary artist devoted to celebrating the transformational power of creative expression. Her passionate love of textiles began as early as she can remember, and she has incorporated sewing, embroidery, tactile collage and weaving as key parts of her artistic practice throughout her life. In her latest project, a conception, she brought her multimedia work into the digital realm in order to share the story of her initiation into motherhood.

“a conception began with my desire to share the unbelievable initiation that called me into motherhood that began unfolding in the spring of 2018. I sometimes refer to my journey as an “unconscious conscious conception” due to the fact that I had never heard of that term until almost a year after I began feeling compelled to follow the mysterious magic that ultimately led me to the birth of my daughter in March 2021. What began as this fairly simple notion of "sharing my story" became a profoundly transformative creative endeavour in and of itself, allowing me to establish a creative practice and discover my authentic forms of self-expression…
…“a conception” is not simply the retelling of my journey through conscious conception, wild pregnancy & sovereign birth…
…in fact, it is the product of an incredibly potent creative process that became a catalyst for reclaiming my innate power and ultimately embarking upon my own healing journey and that continues to unfold to this day.”

The Creative Process
I began to piece together what would become the different components of a conception in scraps of sacred nap-times in the year that followed the birth of my daughter in 2021. As I delved deeper into what this work meant to me, the many layers of the project began to be revealed I realized that the story I was trying to tell would require much more than words alone. As I began reincorporating art practices that I have pursued throughout my life into the creative “writing” process, I was able to visually represent the themes I was exploring. It was affirming to remember that I am an artist first and foremost after all! While I initially set out to simply retell the story of my conscious conception, wild pregnancy and free birth journey, the project has become a catalyst for something much greater than this story alone. Engaging in this creative process has allowed me to recover different threads along the incredible path that I now recognize has been beckoning me my entire life.
The artwork created through this process became a two-part project. The first is the digital scrapbook that includes prose, poetry, photographs, and other multimedia elements and can be read chapter by chapter on Substack…
… and the other is a series of nine-textile based collages that all came together to tell the story of my multidimensional journey of becoming a mother.
The Artworks
The artwork incorporates handwoven textiles, machine and hand sewing, family photographs and found images, dried plants and natural elements, along with other bits and pieces scavenged from my past such as fabric, sketches and even the remains of past art projects. Each of the nine multimedia textile collages is based on a plant ally that embodies the theme of that phase of the life cycle, and the titles of each piece is named for each of these plants respectively.

THE SHARING OF
“a conception”
At first, I used the paywalls I had created to prevent others from witnessing me, knowing me and learning from me...
I also realized that the real value in all of this is beyond what this story and the project itself meant to me alone. The real significance of endeavouring to express my story to the world was through following my unique creative path, which has truly allowed me to see how much deeper this work can go.
As I moved through dozens of iterations of what the project would become, I had to get up close and personal with many subconscious fears I was still holding around being witnessed, speaking my truth and sharing my whole self… and although these lessons were highly important for me to encounter along my creative expression journey, it also led me all the way into the other extreme of believing that what I should do instead was give away all my sacred creative offerings for FREE
Today, not only do I understand how valuable my story is for others to take in through both my lived experience and its transmutation through my creative process…
By engaging with my own creative process I was able to reconnect with this innate power that I now recognize as an exquisitely fundamental aspect of our lives as women…
Similarly to the creation process of this work, the actual sharing of my story has been a massive part of the transformational healing that has unfolded as I have continued to follow where the project as a whole is leading me… and this project may in fact be my life itself. What I mean to refer to through the title of the work “a conception” is the conception of a creative life. Creating and sharing the raw and vulnerable reality of my story has become in a life-alterning catalyst for the transformation that I truly believes lies at the heart of authentic self-expression.
